Waterproof Jewellery

I am very much a take your jewellery off at night kind of girl, but I know lots of my lovelies prefer to put their favourite pieces on and leave them there 24/7. So, I’ve been doing a little research into water safe gemstones to help point you in the right direction if you’re looking for jewellery that suits the way you like to wear it.
All of the metals I use at Little Gems Jewels are durable, tarnish resistant and waterproof, but gemstones can be a little more particular. Some really don’t like water at all, while others may be affected by chlorine in swimming pools, salt water, or even the products you use in the shower.
If you love a good soak in a salt bath or a visit to the spa (who doesn’t?), I would still recommend taking all of your jewellery off first.
The gemstones below are generally considered water safe and should be fine for short periods of time in water:
- Agate
- Amethyst
- Aventurine
- Citrine
- Clear Quartz
- Rose Quartz
- Smoky Quartz
- Moonstone

My top pick if you want something a little more worry free is Cubic Zirconia.
Cubic Zirconia is a manmade stone which is hard, durable and much happier around water than many natural gemstones. It also gives you plenty of sparkle, which is always a bonus!
My Cubic Zirconia Stud Earrings are made with hypoallergenic 316L surgical steel and are available in a choice of colours and sizes, so they’re a lovely option if you want an easy everyday pair of earrings that you don’t have to be quite so precious with.
One other thing to bear in mind when choosing jewellery you might want to wear in water is how the gemstone is attached. Stones that are wire wrapped or securely set in a claw setting will usually be more durable than a half-drilled gemstone which has been attached using jewellery adhesive.
So, while I’ll probably always be the girl carefully taking her jewellery off before bed and popping it safely away, there are definitely some better choices if you prefer to wear yours around the clock!
If you have any questions at all about which gemstones or jewellery might suit you best, please do get in touch. I’m always happy to help.
Gem x
